Meta Description

You have to add a unique and apt meta description and page title. All the meta that go back as schema, open graph tags and everything goes into a proper page on your website need to be paid attention. Again it is going to be an indexed page on your site. It needs to give the necessary attention to detail that every other page received thus far.

Introduction Content

You have to write a unique Introduction content. Writing a minimum of 300 to 500 words should be ideal depending upon the competitiveness.

If you are targetting a specific keyword and going for competitiveness and everyone is ranking has 1000 words, then you probably need to write more than 1000 words or more.

You have to keep an eye on your competitors because people tend to step up their game and you have to do the same thing as well.

It is best to write good content that has all the information you need about that category or tag.

It is also essential to have the internal link to appropriate articles within the category or tag of your website. The internal linking structure contributes to the quality of the content.
Category tag page is going to have A list of all the tagged or categorized content/blog post below it.

Page Structure

You have to have a proper page structure to appeal the search engines and the readers. Again, that gets into H1, H2s that you have to pay attention like any other pages on your website or even more because it can rank better.

You can add a call to action and a contact form and also links to other similar tags which will help to rank better.

Number Of Articles In Each Category Or Tags

Each category or tag should accommodate at least two posts within it. Otherwise, there is no point in having a category page with well-built introduction text and one item in that category.

Similarly, the tag page should also have at least two posts within it. If you find any piece of tag with one article in it, it is too early for that.

To optimize the SEO of a tag, you should also have an intended focus keyword or keywords.

You should do keyword research for the keyword you intend to rank for, similar to other pages or posts.

You have to research for keywords such that you have to visualize how Google is going to see this particular tag page or category page and how it is going to give a better the user experience to the site.

So If you use categories or tags, you need to use them with intention, purpose and unique content.

It is not easy, and you have to pay the same level of attention that you paid for, on the other pages and blog posts on your website, to these pages and build up something amazing.

This aspect can rank categories and tag pages better.

This is a great way to round up a lot of blog content, a lot of your posts and other things created into a super blog post, a super landing page, and even you can call them cornerstone content to be able to outrank or outperform other pieces of content or competitors.

Google hates adding contents of no value after the Panda update. Therefore, indexing the SEO unoptimized pages will affect your website ranking as said above.

When you are not optimizing your tag and category pages, it may create duplicate content too.

In brief, unless optimized, the category/tag pages are useless and even harm the SEO. But In the user experience perspective, it is favorable because it gives good navigation to your site.

My Recommendation

When the question “How To Use Categories And Tags In WordPress” arises my recommendation will be keeping your categories and tag pages as “NOINDEX” and “DOFOLLOW” to get better SEO.

The above settings will ensure that search engines can crawl all the links but cannot index these pages.

When you are setting “NOINDEX” to Index through your SEO plugin, the Google Robot will delete the no index from the indexing when recrawling.

You have to make sure if Google deindexed the pages you preferred. However, you can delete these URLs from the google webmaster tool as well, to speed up the process.

You can see the list of pages indexed by typing in google the search operator site:yourdomain.com.

I wanted to ask if you really need to have tags and categories on your website? What happens if you don’t include them you site. • You should have categories in your website, to structure it properly. If there are no Categories, it will be difficult to search for a post you published. Instead of more tags, Just adding one or two is good.  Moreover, it will not be user-friendly for the visitors and you will start losing them. My recommendation is to set your SEO plugin as “NoIndex” and “Dofollow” for all the category and tag pages or optimize these pages in the SEO aspect. That is You have to do the same SEO works which you do for the post, to these pages also. But it is a time-consuming process. Also, note to have one tag having at least 2 posts in it. Unless you put Noindex google will Index. Otherwise, it will Crawl but will not Index. I shall be writing more on this subject.

      Hope this helps you.

You can add tags which is relevant to the post. As a norm, I will use 4 to 6 tags. But I do not worry because of I no index the tags. Use only one category, otherwise, you will face the duplicate content issue. Do not overload the tags.
